Eye Test

An eye test on a regular basis is one of the best ways to keep a check on the health of your eyesight. Early detection can help stop or slow down the development of several eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration, which may cause loss of vision or even blindness in some cases. So visit your optician or optometrist on a regular basis to carry out an eye test.

An eye test at Mairead O'Leary Opticians begins with a complete review of your own health history and that of your family. This is followed by an examination of the exterior and interior of your eyes. This may include checks for eye diseases and general health problems which may affect the eyes, such as diabetes. We then check your eyesight by testing your ability to see sharply at near and far distances, check eye muscle function and eye coordination, ability to change focus easily from near-to-far and vice versa, together with several other tests.

Age-based Eye Tests

We recognise that people may have different eyesight problems at different stages of their life. Hence, we carry out further tests depending on the age of the person. We check young children check for crossed eyes and test their hand-eye coordination. If necessary, we conduct a further series of tests to determine how well the child’s vision skills are developing. For adults over 40, we check eye pressure for glaucoma and for signs of presbyopia and cataracts. If we suspect exposure to other risk factors, we may also conduct certain additional eye tests to detect the occurance of any issues.

After the eye test is conducted we will discuss the findings of the examinations with you. We will carry out the screening and, if necessary, refer you to a specialist who will carry out further diagnosis and prescribe treatment. We will discuss other matters, such as good vision at work and maintaining eye health. We can also talk to you about other factors in your life which have an effect on eye health such as diet and environmental factors.

Enhanced Eye Test

An enhanced eye test will include digital fundus photography to compare retinal images over a period of time, field screening to detect early onset of diseases and a wider range of tests to screen for possible glaucoma. You will also have more time available with our practitioner in order to screen for other diseases and to have in-depth discussions of your eye health. Many of these tests are targetted specifically for people over the age of 40. At that age, numerous eye conditions may develop, some being asymptomatic. In such cases, early detection is the best remedy.
