Who is an Optician?

An optician is a primary health care practitioner who looks after the vision systems in people. An optician designs, fits and dispenses lenses for the correction of a person's vision. They determine the specifications of various ophthalmic appliances that will give the necessary correction to a person's eyesight. The law in Ireland distinguishes between an optometrist and an dispensing optician.

Optometrists are entitled to prescribe, dispense and sell spectacles while an optician is not entitled to prescribe spectacles. However, they are entitled to dispense and sell spectacles. Irish Law requires every opthalmic professional, be it a dispensing optician or an optometrist to be registered with the Opticians Board (Bord Na Radharcmhastóirí). These professionals have to meet standards of practice and training, commit to ongoing education, hold professional liability insurance and are held to these standards by the Board.

Make sure that the opthalmic professional you are visiting is registered with the Opticians Board, either as a Registered Optometrist, or as a Registered Dispensing Optician. We are listed with the Opticians Board as a registered optometrist, which means we can prescribe as well as dispense and sell spectacles. Remember, an optician cannot prescribe spectacles. An optician can only dispense and sell spectacles.

You will find a qualified and highly experienced optician at each of our branches in Rathmines and Blanchardstown, who complement a workforce of opthalmic professionals, certified by the Opticians Board.
