Opticians can prescribe, design and fit corrective lenses for people. Irish Law differentiates between optometrists and “dispensing opticians” and requires that optometrists be registered with the Opticians Board (Bord Na Radharcmhastóirí). Optometrists are entitled to prescribe, dispense and sell spectacles while the dispensing opticians can only dispense and sell spectacles, but not prescribe them. They have to meet standards of practice and training, commit to ongoing education, hold professional liability insurance and are held to these standards by the Board.
