Your World – Bring it to life

October 16th, 2012

I am just such a fan of Maui Jim sunglasses. Why ? Really comfortable frames, fantastic wraparound features, and lenses that really bring your world alive. Discover how.

So why Polarised Sunglasses?

May 5th, 2012

Polarised sunglass lenses are far superior at cutting out glare than basic tinted lenses.   Also, they are not overly dark to look through, so you don’t have to constantly take them on and off when the clouds come out.

Due to the quality of the lenses, polarised prescription sunglasses are usually more expensive than sunglasses with a standard tint.

We are currently running an offer on prescription polarised sunglasses, including frame and lenses:

  • €200 for polarised single vision lenses and frame.
  • €325 for polarised varifocal lenses and frame.

The selection and quality of frames on offer is great too.  Here are photos of some of the frames included in the offer:

Are Polarised Sunglasses better than normal Sunglasses?

January 21st, 2012

When looking at a flat surface like a road, the surface of still water, or the bonnet of a car, there is a lot of light reflected from the surface.  This can be very dazzling and cause a lot of glare.  Most of the light from a surface like this is reflected in the horizontal direction instead of being scattered in several directions.

Polarised lenses cut out all the glare in the horizontal direction, allowing you to see past those reflections.  This enhances the colours visible beneath the reflection, the contrast of the object , and increases the overall visual comfort for the wearer.  They are excellent for general use, and also for activities such as water sports and driving

Because the technology in this type of lens cuts out so much glare, the lens itself doesn’t need to be as strongly tinted as regular sunglasses.  This means that they can be used more often, as they’re not excessively dark to look through.  Also, when you’re driving you won’t have to take them on and off  as much as normal sunglasses if the weather gets duller (as it tends to do a lot in Ireland!).

However, they should be used with caution while skiing, as they may cut out so much glare that the wearer might find it difficult to differentiate between snow and ice.

15 out of 21 pairs of sunglasses on British High Street fail key tests

October 31st, 2011

High street sunglasses fail British standards 15 out of 21 pairs of sunglasses fail key tests…

The British consumer right group Which? tested 21 pairs of sunglasses from seven high street shops and found that 15 failed key lab tests, breaching the British Standard.

According to Which? you might not expect a pair of £5 sunglasses to last forever, but you wouldn’t expect a supposed bargain to potentially worsen your eyesight, cause double vision or headaches.

Too dark for driving

The sunglasses on test were bought from George at Asda, Marks & Spencer, New Look, Poundland, Primark, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

All the sunglasses blocked UV rays, but a Poundland pair was mislabelled, leaving a wearer unaware that the lenses were too dark for safe driving.

Although two out of three Primark pairs passed the tests, the one that failed had the wrong prescription level which could make vision problems, such as astigmatism, worse.

Cork Week – Sailing Paradise – Maui Jims prevail

July 21st, 2010

It was truly astonishing to see the number of Maui Jim sunglasses being supported at the Biennial  Cork week sailing event.  While many sunglasses look the same, the Maui Jim sunglasses case sets them apart.

They are big – so you wont forget them. They are incredible strong so no matter what abuse you give them, you favourite sunglasses are fully protected, when you are not wearing them.

We all forget out sunglasses after sailing – a few drinks to rehydrate and engage in social banter as we re-live the races.  The Maui Jim sunglasses do not get lost, you just cant forget them!

Well worth the extra bit.

Head to Head on sunglasses – Maui Jim V Adidas

March 29th, 2010

Fiddly Bits Beneteau 31.7

This head to head competition between two well known sunglasses brands takes place in Dublin Bay.  Unfortunately we have not willing purchasers coming forward to buy our boat for sale in Dun Laoghaire.  So its time to get Fiddly Bits ready for racing again.   Now I  can compare and contrast my Maui Jim prescription sunglasses in a head to head with Addidas Sports prescription sunglasses.  So if you are a sailor or spend time on the water, this is for you!

First the Adidas

addidas

These frames give you real confidence if you need to give it your all.  The lens block is clipped securely to inside of the frame.  This means that no matter what your prescription, it can be accommodated with these frames.  Your vision is also good quality because the lenses are close to your eyes giving a good all round visibility.

What is amazing about these frame is that every bit of them clips together. Yes, each side, the nose pad, the darkened outer lenses and the inner lens block.  This means that if you get a knock, your frame wont dig into your face. They crumple like a crumple zone of a car, thus protecting your eyes, while not damaging your spectacles.  I have had a few knocks or bangs off other crew members and believe it, these are the frames to wear for close contact sports.   They also come as standard with alternative shades.  The mirror ones are particularly useful if your previous night was too late!.

Next up: the Maui Jim sunglasses:

mauijim

These are more in the tradition of traditional sunglasses, but there is a huge difference.  When you are a skipper on a boat,  your hands are full and you cant afford to be putting on and taking off sunglasses and leaving them on the deck to get thrashed.

However most days in Ireland are not endless sunny days, but rather slightly overcast, partially sunny etc.  This is where the Maui Jim’s score ahead of any sunglasses I have ever worn.   Maui Jim prescription sunglasses are designed to optimize light and contrast in lower light conditions. Thus they really do give you and edge when spotting marks out on the bay.  They are truly of outstanding optical quality and the sunglasses for Captains, main sheet trimmers and strategists.   They also look cool and are incredibly comfortable.

Conclusion: If your sport is in the high impact environment, the Addidas have the edge. However if you just want the kind of sunglasses you could wear all evening the Maui Jim’s have got to be the choice.
